Mother Nature

We just had an earthquake! Oh how I hate them. It's been a while since I felt one. You grow comfortable and forget about the possibilities. No two ever are quite the same either. This was a gradual roll that lasted maybe twenty seconds. A short time, but while it is happening, it feels too long. I sat and listened, waiting to see if it would get worse. I thought about the bookcases to the left of my bed that I just moved in here to my bedroom. While I was placing them I thought that I should anchor them to the wall since they are so close to my bed. A bad earthquake could topple them on me if I were laying in bed at the time. I haven't done it yet. I think a trip to Home Depot is in store for me today.

Ah. You just confirmed my quake experience.  This one was a 'fun' one -- the rolling kind.  Yes, lasted long enough.  20 seconds is a LONG time for the earth to move without our knowledge, y'know?

ABSOLUTELY anchor that bookcase.  We did that with Andi's.  Do it with all 'loose' furniture.  Maybe even put a brace for the front of your books and things too, so they don't go flying out.  Just a thought.

P.S.  Andi slept through her first earthquake!

Yikes...rolling, shaking ground without our consent is just NOT my idea of fun...have fun at Home Depot!  JAE

please anchor those bookcases!  glad it was a "small" earthquake.
i see that Andi slept through it.  LOL she would have been so freaked out if she had felt it.

My first head's up about the earthquake was a call from Ken. "So you survived," he said. And like usual, I said, "Huh?"

I slept through it. Yep, slept through my first quake. I'm a bit disappointed.

Wow.
I experienced a few of them in my life.
and it's just something you could never get used too.
The seconds do last forever.
glad your not hurt!
::wondering if this is andi's first::

OMG ... take necessary precautions. We're trying to kick the hurricane season off in style here in South Florida. Have not seen the sun in days!

glad nothing toppled over on you!  i hope you've got them anchored to the wall now.  i read that it was 75 miles away from you.  we once felt an earthquake here that happened several hundred miles away.  very strange!!

ewww...earthquakes!  We actually had one in GA a year or two ago...and I totally felt it.  It was like big booking thunder shaking the apt.  The water in my glass slowly rocked back in forth..it was the weirdest thing.  Glad you're safe though!

Anchoring your bookcases is a good idea.  Also putting little ledges on your shelves that you keep breakable dishes in. When I lived in California I had these padded containers that I kept my "good" china in.

Want to know something wierd though? I sort of miss earthquakes.  Even the big one in 1989 (where the Bay Bridge collapsed) was sort of exciting.  On the other hand, since we've moved to the midwest, I have nightmares about tornados!
