Robbie's Ramblings

Woohoo!! We have contact. I spent part of yesterday setting up my cable. I'm adventurous and took the self-installation route. After going in to work for several hours on Saturday, I went to Circuit City and picked up the modem and install kit. I opened them and the wireless router. After scanning the directions, I thought it was best to tackle the challenge with a fresh mind. So, I waited until yesterday morning to give it a try. The router directions were a bit confusing for me so I decided to hook up the cable first and make sure I had it operable before hooking up the router. The router was not being cooperative. The software said it couldn't find an internet connection. I took a break for a couple of hours and tried again. It still wasn't working. I sent Kevin a desparate message for help and he came over last night and got me hooked up. Thanks Kevin!!! Woohoo!!! I'm on cable and I am wireless. I still need to install some software but I'm zooming along. Honestly, I don't see much of a difference from dial-up, other than being able to view video feeds and music without the buffering factor.

I've had some new people poke their heads in here lately and leave me comments. I've spent the last hour or so searching them out so I could add them to Bloglines. Some I failed at finding. I think I like Freee's idea of leaving a link in comments now that we have that linkable option. It was frustrating trying to track people down. I clicked on their profile, no link. I then pasted their username into the Hometown search page. I hit debug for the Runtime Error that popped up a zillion times and then the message pops up that no journal was found. Errrggg! So, if you come back, please, please, please leave a link. My sanity would greatly appreciate it. And, I will try my best to start leaving links when I stop by other people's journals. Although, I've always kept a link in my profile. I never left them in my messages because I didn't want people to feel like I was pandering for a visitor here. But, I'm all about making things as easy as possible so I'll acquiesce and return the favor.

Now, if someone could explain how to insert video into a journal. I would be ever so grateful. I checked out the message boards for journals and the computer graphics stuff and found no mention of adding video feeds to journals. I've seen other people do it so it must be possible. I think.

For the first time yesterday, I visited a new journal, and left a link to mine in the comments.  And then I had to add that I wasn't pimping my journal, just leaving the link in case they wanted to find me.  I don't feel altogether comfortable with the "link-leaving" thing...for exactly the reason you stated.

It crossed my mind the other day that these journals would be perfect if we could add music to them.  Music is such a part of the fabric of my life...I feel like it would add a wonderful dimension to my journal that is supposed to be about me.  But I don't want to add so much STUFF to my journal that it takes forever to load...  Video feed would be nice, too.  Lisa  :-]

Is it true that when you have a wireless router that if you turn on a dishwasher or a cell phone rings, you get knocked offline? I was told that.
I agree that the link idea is a good one. I too have looked for people who commented and can't always find them.
Have a great day,
Angela

Hi,

Congratulations to you for tackling it yourself.  I don't even have the guts to get cable internet much less try to install it myself.  Pat yourself on the back.

I didn't know we could put video on our journals?  I like your journal and I will have to keep coming back.  Let me know how you feel about that and I will also leave a link here.

Best Wishes,
Anita

Now wait a minute...you're confusing me.  Is this Robbie's Ruminations or Robbie's Ramblings?  Or Rambling Robbie's Ruminations?  Or Rotten Robbie's Rambling Ruminations?  Or ... oh heck, I'm just losing my mind and thought I'd share.  LOL

Yay! Woo hoo cable! I love my cable modem and wireless router. I've put links to videos in my journal, but never an actual video that plays right on the entry. I'll have to try that! -B

Woohoo on high speed access.  Or, higher speed video loading. :P

Don't know if you've figured out the video thing yet.  But all I did was upload it to my website or FTP space [note: may take up more space. try uploading to a different screen name's FTP space].  Then link away like usual.

Have fun!  Can hardly wait to see the new enhancements in Arr-Arr!  :P

Enjoy your cable...it really is awesome. If you find out how to do the video thing...let me know. Not that I have any more room in my ftp space though. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Good for you on all the work you have done....... yes, the clickable links are a delightful new wrinkle as I too have been thwarted sometimes when trying to say hello to a new reader.
You know right where to find me, but here it is anyway!! judi :):)

One - congrats on going cable!!!  Woohoo!!  I like the idea of people adding their journal addresses to their profile. That's an easy way to find them.

Now, as to adding video to your journal, it would depend on HOW you want to add it.  You can add it as a link.  You can add animated .gifs.  But imbedding an actual video?  Dunno.  You could try the imbed feature - same as you would with a song file.  See if that works.  But I'd go with a simple text link to the video. That way, people who already KNOW they can't download videos won't be bothered with getting stuck in your journal, waiting for the unloadable to load.  Plus, AOL's video player isn't the best.  With a text link, you can encourage people to open it OUTSIDE of AOL. And that's best.  Email me if you have other questions I might be able to answer.

Robbie the Cable Guy will see you now!

Please be kind with that video, dear. And if you can't be kind, perhaps you'll include a whopping disclaimer, disclosing the copious amounts of rum, once swirling in the coveted Poet's Cup, that made its way to my bloodstream before the dramatic haiku reading.

It really was a fun afternoon.  Do what you have to do.

I'm still on the hookup system where the cavemen and women send out the homing pigeons and the Native Americans send up the smoke signals and it all gets S-L-O-W-L-Y downloaded into my dial-up system.  :-(, LOL.

thanks for the heads-up about linking journals in comments, Albert

Installing our router was a nightmare. WE tried to economize and bought the wired one. Had to drill a hole in our wall. We ended up calling Verizon about a dozen times after installing the disc....they put us through to Linksys who were no help. Finally someone at Verizon told us to try something that was not listed in the instructions and that worked!

Yea on the cable.  I'm wondering why I didn't get an alert for this entry.  I'm still having some problems with my journal.  Can't help you with the video.  Sorry!

Isn't wireless great? Glad you got it all hooked up and are ready to go.  Computer issues can be a hassle and mindboggling at times.  It's always good to have a friend that really knows what they are doing! lol
