Woops! I lied.

The comment made by sistercdr on my last entry made me realize that I have in fact asked a guy out on a date before. Silly me! I didn't even remember that I had asked John to my senior prom. Maybe because it was so long ago. Yeah! That's it!

I moved to Los Fresnos, Texas from Pennsylvania in April of my junior year in high school. Our prom in PA had not occurred yet. As such, I missed going to my junior prom. I was pretty bummed because the guy who asked me was a crush of mine since 8th grade. Oh well, life goes on and there was still my senior prom to look forward to.

John was one of the first guys I got to know in Los Fresnos. I actually met him on a triple date set up by two of my girlfriends. He was suppose to be my date and this other guy was suppose to be hooked up with my girlfriend Angie. Well, things didn't quite work out as planned. John and Angie hooked up, and me and the other guy hooked up. But, it was the beginning of a great friendship for John and I. We found out that his house was right behind mine. He would jump my back fence and come over for help on his Civics homework and I would go over to his house to go swimming.

One time when I was over there swimming, I met a gorgeous red-headed guy named F. (His name is very unique, so I'd rather not use it here.) He was John's cousin. We really hit it off but I really didn't think much of it until he started showing up at my locker every day with a rose. We dated for a couple of months and then something happened at the homecoming bonfire and we broke up. I missed out on going to homecoming because of him, even though he was sweet enough to give me a homecoming mum anyhow. Having a homecoming mum was a big deal in that town. Well, F and I got back together a couple of months later, only to break up again about a month before prom. And, this time I was so pissed I wouldn't even look at him in the hall when we passed each other. I was being a total biatch, but I think he deserved it. He was a real gigolo. He wanted me on a leash, but didn't want me at the same time. As soon as I looked like I was getting away, he would want me back and well I'm a sucker for red-heads. But this time, I didn't see any reconciliations on the horizon and I sure as heck didn't want to miss prom. It was my last chance.

Angie and John had broke up a couple of weeks before F and I. As such, I had the brilliant idea to ask John to go to the prom with me. After all we were friends, I was sure to have a good time. Even still, I was nervous as can be to ask him. I drug a friend along for moral support. His answer: I'll have to think about it and let you know. UG! That was rough and I didn't even get my answer until about a week later. I think since F was his cousin he wanted to clear it with him first. Plus, during that week he went and bought a car so he would have something to drive us to prom in. I guess the thought of going to the prom with each other opened our eyes to seeing each other in a different light and we began dating.

He was the sweetest guy. I'll always remember our first kiss.  It was prom night on South Padre Island. My eyes were closed but yet I still saw stars.  If only I hadn't been so fickle. I was torn between him and F. and on graduation night ended up with F, which put an end to the romance with John. But, we remained friends for a while until I left for the Army. What a tangled web, the life of a teenager. But you know, at that age, I don't think you should be all that serious about anyone anyhow.

So, I did in fact ask a guy out before. But, I guess it doesn't really count since he was already a friend.

I've never asked a guy out, but I think it kind of sounds fun and I wonder if I'd have the heart to now nearing 40. Glad I won't need to. I met my husband at age 24 via a video dating service. I was tired of only dating losers and believed I had a better chance of meeting a quality guy. My husband slept over on the first date, breaking every one of my rules, and he never went home, and we married 5 months later. I vote for video dating.

PS - and I vote for breaking your own rules sometimes.

Well since you did it once, there's nothing to stop you from doing it again now.

Ummmmm. Red-heds. What is it about them that drives some of us crazy. I can't tell why, but I can say its true. Heavy sigh.

I never understood that rule about the guy always asking the girl out. I think that if you feel the need and want then go for it. Why let a simple rule stop what can be a great start to a greater relationship? Besides, shyness goes both ways. Hugs Lanny

Hmm, what is it about redheaded guys? Maybe because there's not that many of them, think about it, and they're just unique. My redheaded love is close to being totally gray now, the red has faded, but in my mind, he will always be the redhead freckle face boy that stole my heart. Never really had a thing for blonds though, lol! Love, Penny

I don't think I've ever asked a guy out. I guess I'm a mad flirt, but with very little ambition. LOL The dating scene always made me nervous. Good for you, though, for going for it!! Girls with confidence are so sexy! Rawrrrrr... tehehehe...

Of course it counts! It even makes it that much more "scary" - to ask out a friend. There's more at risk. Brave girl. I'm really upset with your parents for moving before your Junior Prom. [shows my mentality, I suppose] but you really bounced back. Moving didn't even seem to affect you. And the rose at your locker every day. Awww. Sweet. I think our Homecoming flower was the carnation. A lot of my HS career is a big blur. I remember the fun though. :) Ohhh...wow...just remembered, I asked out my Junior Prom date. We had a BLAST!!! He didn't go to my school. He was a great guy. Fun. First on the dance floor. Lots of laughs. We went with a whole group of friends. Where ARE those pictures? [god help us all!] haha! Great entry Robbie! :)

Ah, high school memories. Believe it or not, I never had a prom. I went to a Catholic school back in the Philippines at the time when the principal was this nun who had a stick up her you know where and didn't allow it. Can you imagine!

I like that picture! Takes me back...waaaay back ;P I never had a prom, I wasn't asked :( but, did go to a couple of other dances. Back in those days, I was the shy kid that people didn't seem to notice. But, after high school, I turned into a chatter box.
You could have a small get together, and ask him and it wouldn't 'seem' like you were asking him out.

I'm guessing most of us have probably dated an 'F' somewhere along the line. Why is it that girls always want the most unattainable guys?? =)

You really should try to get in touch with John. Sounds like the kind of friendship that would last through the years. I just recently started trying to find some of my old high school friends. And it actually feels pretty good! =)
