Superstitious

I am soooooooo not done with posting videos!

If someone asked me if I was superstitious I would tell them no. I don't think something out there controls my experience nor can anything I do thwart that. Yet, I am a walking contradiction to my very own beliefs. Perhaps I merely give them lip service or within me hope burns an eternal flame.

Because I love and save fortunes from fortune cookies. When someone says something ominous, without thinking I knock on my head, i.e. wood. I love the concept of Karma and I love, love, love getting good horoscopes like this one:

Scorpio (10/23-11/21)
Stepping outside of your comfort zone is by definition uncomfortable. But isn't it usually incredibly rewarding, too? You're in a strong phase of risk-taking and you are a brave person, so this combination means that right now you are in a prime position to make a huge leap in your life. Whether it's changing your job, moving to a new city, or starting a new relationship, you are ready to explore living your life in a new way. Talk to those who have done it before and get some tips.

P.S. Those in the know keep it on the down low if you choose to comment. Y'ah dig?

Well, no one is less superstitious than I, and yet every year I make a ritual of cutting out my horoscope and pasting it into my journal ~ my mother used to call me on my birthday and read me my horoscope, and I miss that. She believed in it enough for both of us, so I still kinda love it. Especially when it tells me how great I am and what fab things are going to happen!

I also like those fortunes that come in individually wrapped Dove candies ~ I saved one that said, Don't think about it so much! and I thought, how can this candy know me so well?

And then I cried a little. ;D

I can dig it!

Stictly speaking, I don't think horoscopes are exactly superstitions... Astrology is more like an ancient religious cult... :)

"May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back..."
...for whatever adventures are in store.

Lisa, one might argue that any religion, cultic or otherwise, is superstitious, strictly speaking of course. I do not wish to judge or mock the beliefs of others.

Random House defines superstition as such:

1. a belief or notion, not based on reason or knowledge, in or of the ominous significance of a particular thing, circumstance, occurrence, proceeding, or the like.
2. a system or collection of such beliefs.
3. a custom or act based on such a belief.
4. irrational fear of what is unknown or mysterious, esp. in connection with religion.
5. any blindly accepted belief or notion.

Hebrews sums up the definition of faith quite well and the definition can be applied to any religion because none of it is evidentiary: Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Is religion then not a blindly accepted belief?

Are you joining the Peace Corps? Are you converting to Scientology? Are you getting married? Are you gay? Are you secretly on the space station and are trying to send super-secret signals you need to be rescued? Are you bigger than a breadbox?

Am I right? Where's my t-shirt??

Happy Birthday! THough I don't exactly know when it is, lol. It IS a great horoscope. I think the ones in the back of Toown and Country are amazingly accurate...there is a weekly report you can get by calling the number of the person who does theirs and it's great.... you can find her name on the horoscope page in the mag if you are interested next time you pass a magazine stand... It's the last page in the mag.
